Remark Topsent (1931) believed this is a variety of Spongia officinalis and that the locality was Mediterranean despite Lamarck's record of 'Mer Rouge et Océan Indien'. [details]
Specimen The Leiden Museum incorporates a small collection of Lamarck specimens ('duplicates'), which were donated by the Paris Museum in 1815 as part compensation for lost Dutch natural history objects sequestered during the French occupation of Holland (1795-1813). Among these there are specimens labeled Spongia lacinulosa. In the absence of specimens left in Paris, these are here considered the syntypes. [details]
Taxonomy Topsent 1931 page 12 considered this species as a synonym of Euspongia officinalis var adriatica Schmidt, 1862 [details]
