Taxonomy In recent molecular-phylogenetic studies (e.g. Borchiellini et al. 2004; Maldonado, 2009), the old name Myxospongiae is used for an assemblage of orders, that come out as a clade repeatedly. These are the orders Chondrillida/Halisarcida, Chondrosiida and Verongiida. Maldonado (2009) provided ultrastructural evidence that supports these three orders as a monophyletic group at the subclass level. It is unclear why the name Myxospongiae has been revived for a different assemblage than the original group of Haeckel (and Zittel). Myxospongiae means literally 'slime sponges', and originally this was intended for sponges like Halisarca and Oscarella lacking both discrete organic fibers and siliceous spicules. Higher taxa names are 'free' from priority rules of the ICZN, and common sense dictates that an assemblage with a radically different content should get a new name. Accordingly the recently proposed name Verongimorpha has gained acceptance. [details]
