Taxonomy Helmut Lehnert (in litteris) points out that Tanita described this as having no cortex and no visible distinction between the ectosome and choanosome, so likely this is not a Craniella but a Tetilla. [details]
Validity The variety was described by Tanita from the Ariake Sea, Japan, approximate coordinates 32.9167°N 130.35°E, depth not provided. Type material has not been identified. Tanita & Hoshino (1998) reported the species from the Sagami Bay, Japan. Although the name is unavailable because Tanita erected the variety after 1960 (ICZN art. 15.2), Lehnert & Stone 2011 (table 1) transferred the material to genus Tetilla as T. anamonaena, which made the name available under ICZN art. 45.5.1 as a nomen novum authored by these authors although these authors did not recognize the invalidity of Tanita's name. Van Soest (2024: 53 confirmed the name combination is valid under authorship and year of Lehnert & Stone (2011). [details]
