Remark Google Books provides pdf copies of both volumes of Von Martens 'Reise nach Venedig' (1824). There is no Spongia contarenii mentioned in this work. Nevertheless, Lieberkühn (1859) attributed this name to Von Martens and he even quotes p. 455 (which page contains only names of gastropods, no sponges). The sponges listed by Von Martens are given on pages 535-538.
The conclusion appears inescapable, that Lieberkühn (1859) must be considered the author of this species, not Martens. [details]
