Homonymy The genus name Menyllus sensu Gray, 1867 was used for sponges similar to Iophon. Several authors (e.g. Burton and Koltun)...
Homonymy The genus name Menyllus sensu Gray, 1867 was used for sponges similar to Iophon. Several authors (e.g. Burton and Koltun) used the name as a replacement for the genus name Iophon because Menyllus has page priority over Iophon (pp. 533 vs. 534). Desqueyroux-Faúndez & Van Soest (1886) discussed their synonymy and argued (erroneously) that the name Menyllus was a nomen oblitum in the sense of the ICZN, making use of Ridley & Dendy's (1887) choice of Iophon as 'first reviser' ((ICZN art. 23 and 24). The reason for denying Menyllus as a replacement for Iophon was in fact different and much stronger: Menyllus Gray, 1867 was preoccupied by Menyllus Pascoe, 1864 (Coleoptera). This was already discovered by Vosmaer (1887: 238). The present genus name is thus invalid for use in Porifera. [details]
