A sample from a rich population of the abyssal articulate brachiopod Macandrevia africana was dredged during the Walda cruise (1971). An approach to the growth of the shell of this species is analysed. Firstly by means of a biometrical analysis of a sample of shells, in the size range 4-29 mm, and secondly through a study of the distribution of the growth rings on the shell surface as well as of the microstructure. The results suggest a periodicity in the growth of Macandrevia africana. Comparison with the growth rhythms of other articulate brachiopods shows that no particular growth mode can be related to the abyssal environment of this species.
