Authority Lamarck took the name Syllis monilaris from Savigny's unpublished Ms volume from 'Description de l'Égypte .... Histoire Naturelle', and Savigny's plate 4 figure 3 as Lamarck cites this unpublished work. Lamarck's description is very different from the eventual 1822 Savigny text and much shorter. It necessarily has used the Savigny Ms information but was not written by Savigny. So the authorship cannot be Savigny in Lamarck as Savigny did not write the text. If Savigny's work had appeared promptly and before Lamarck's less detailed presentation as intended there would be no priority problem to discuss. It did not and so today we can see Lamarck's text as taking unfair advantage of Savigny in the case of Syllis. [details]
