Validity This 'genus' was erected under the rules of the Phylocode, which does not recognize ranks or type species. It is unclear if it should be considered a taxon at the genus level as it appears to be a two-genus combination (perhaps technically it is then a (sub)family level taxon). The name is here adopted because it appears in the literature encompassing two named genera Plakortis and Plakinastrella, but its position in the present classification is controversial. Phylocode and Linnaean classifications show fundamental differences. The 'definition' of Plakostrella is quoted from the original paper: (apomorphy-based) the clade originating with the first species to have alophose spicules as inherited by Plakortis simplex Schulze, 1880. The WPD is part of the WoRMS database which is founded upon the Linnaean classification. The ‘genus’ name is here considered unavailable, and the contents are to be reverted to the synonymy of genus Plakortis, until their status as members of Homosclerophorida have been made under the Code of the ICZN. The present name is not recognized by the WPD under its current definition and its use as a taxon name is discouraged. [details]
