The Actiniaria has been a neglected group in the New Zealand fauna. Apart from a few papers in the Transactions of the former New Zealand Institute, and a few other journals, published in the early days of zoology in this country, there is only Carlgren's paper on the collection from Mortensen's Expedition. This lack of knowledge of the group, and the inadequacy of the early papers in the light of Carlgren's recent work on the systematics, has prompted me to prepare this review, in the hope that it will provide a useful starting point for further and more detailed information on the New Zealand Actiniaria. It will be obvious to the reader of this paper that many systematic problems remain unsolved, and it is very possible that many new species remain to be discovered, both in the wellknown parts of the coast, and in places that have up till now been unexplored. The check-list contains the species which have previously been described, including some which have not been found for a number of years, and some hitherto unrecorded forms. The classification and nomenclature is that used by Professor O. Carlgren (1949). A short Glossary of most of the technical terms is included at the end of the paper. I have included also a key to the commoner forms, for use in the field. Anemones do not lend themselves easily to a ' key-system ' of this type since so many of the characters visible in the field are not those on which, ultimately, the classification is based. But in view of the widespread demand for a method of easy identification of the common anemones of our coast, I think that a key, however inadequate it may be, will be of some value to the student.
