[From Introduction]

Nereids have usually been considered characteristic of shallow water (Hartman, 1965) and are generally thought of as living on hard substrates between tufted seaweed, shells, rocks and algal holdfasts (cf. Hartmann-Schröder, 1971). The family is, however, well represented in deep water. Hartman (1971, p. 1418) listed thirteen species in six genera from waters deeper than 2000 m; Fauchald (1972) added five species from waters deeper than 1000 m; below, four new species are described, all from waters deeper than 800 m. Some genera are better represented in deep water than are others (e.g., Ceratocephale), but it appears probable that all nereid genera will be found in deep water.
