The present paper deals with the micropalaeontological inventory and the biostratigraphy of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Plassen-Formation of the type locality (Mount Plassen near Hallstatt) on the basis of a recent re-investigation. The succession of shallow-water and slope carbonates are rich in benthic foraminifera, Dasycladales (green algae), “porostromate” algae, Cyanophyceae, microproblematica and some parataxa allowing for the characterization of the different facies zones and biostratigraphic dating. The individual taxa are illustrated in detail with additional well-preserved material from other localities enabling subsequent workers to do micropalaeontological determinations. The following taxa are established: Favreina lahngangkogelensis n. sp. (crustacean coprolite) and Streptocyclammina hottingeri n. sp. (benthonic foraminifer). Based on the recent state-of-knowledge in the literature about the total stratigraphic ranges of individual benthic foraminifera and dasycladales and their occurrences at Mt. Plassen, a stratigraphic division of the type locality of the Plassen Formation is established. Whether it can be applied also to other occurrences in the area of the Northern Calcareous Alps can only be answered in future times after their re-investigation.
