Etymology The genus is named after Émile-François Maupas (b. Vaudry, 2 July 1842; d. Alger, 18 October 1916), a French librarian, zoologist and botanist: "Je dédie cette Annélide à mon savant ami Maupas, qui s'occupe avec tant de succès de l'étude des Protozoaires" (Viguier, 1886: 382). [details]
Type designation Type species Maupasia coeca Viguier, 1886, by monotypy. Viguier (1886: 382) used the expression "nov. gen. et spec." for Maupasia coeca, but according to ICZN Code Article 68.2.1, this expression or an equivalent are solely considered to be an original designation when it designates only one of two or more nominal species originally included in a new nominal genus or subgenus.
