Description Species very variable in size and shape. Cells 18–32 μm long and 18–48 μm wide, dorso-ventrally flattened (10–15 μm thick), and roughly elliptical in shape. Epicone with a dome-like projection. Hypocone bilobed with the left lobe longer than the right lobe, and excavated. Cingulum premedian to median and displaced by its own width. Sulcus extending onto the epicone. Nucleus spherical to slightly oval and located in the left hypocone. Chloroplasts yellow-green in colour, variable in number, in size and in shape. Apical groove short, extending dorsally over 1/3 of the epicone (Haywood et al., 2004). [details]

Identification Karenia papilionacea is closely related to K. brevis. Hence, until it was described in 2004, these two species were often confused and labelled either K. brevis or K. cf. brevis (Chang, 1995). [details]
