Classification Position in genus uncertain, identity of species uncertain. [details]
Taxonomy Walker's (1812) species Spongia columbae described in a volume with many different subjects on Scottish history and landscapes, was picked up by Fleming (1828: 621, as Halichondria columbae). Fleming intended to provide a new name for Spongia cancellata sensu Sowerby, 1806, a junior homonym of S. cancellata Linnaeus, 1767. De Weerdt (1986) synonymized the latter with Haliclona cinerea Grant, 1826, without apparently having noticed Walker's name and Fleming's proposed removal of the synonymy of S. cancellata with columbae Walker. It is likely, that both cancellataSowerby and columbae are synonyms of Haliclona cinerea, which would mean that cinerea is threatened by being a junior name of columbae. Art. 23.9.2 will have to be invoked to suppress Haliclona columbae in favour of the much used H. cinerea. Until this has been proposed the present combination is maintained. Thanks to Andreu Santin Muriel for pointing this out. [details]
