Nomenclature Most members of Heterocoela are Calcaronea, so there is a loose connection between the classical term Heterocoela and the modern subclass Calcaronea. The Leuconidae enclosed in Poléjaeff's Heterocoela are partially members of Calcinea (a.o. genus Leucetta), so the term Heterocoela is not an exact synonym and because higher taxa names are not bound to the Principle of Priority the name Calcaronea is a valid replacement name.
Burton (1963) erected a family name Heterocoelidae, but since there is no genus name Heterocoela the family name is unavailable (ICZN Art. 29.1). We will not list a separate taxon Heterocoelidae, also because it contains members of many different families of both subclasses of the Calcarea. [details]
