Taxonomy Tubella is generally considered a junior synonym of Metania Gray, 1867. However, de Laubenfels 1936 indicated Spongilla paulata (sic) Bowerbank, 1863 as the type species of Tubella. This species is probably the same as Spongilla paulula Bowerbank, 1863, a member of the genus Trochospongilla Vejdovsky, 1883. By De Laubenfels' action Tubella should be considered a senior synonym of Trochospongilla. [details]

Synonymy According to a recent paper (Pinheiro & Nicacio, 2012), Tubella is a valid genus. We will await further research before implementing this.
