Synonymy The species (which was misspelled in the main text as corlosia, but corrected in the Errata to coelasia) was described by Duchassaing & Michelotti from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, approximate coordinates 18.37°N 64.9°W. No material has survived (Van Soest et al. 1983: 203, table I). I propose to reassign it provisionally to Spongia (Spongia) tubulifera Lamarck, 1814 as the most likely identity based on Hyatt’s and Von Lendenfeld’s treatment of Spongia corlosia (sic). [details]
Type material No extant type material. This name was corrected to Spongia coelosia in the errata and from the description this was the intended name (the authors compare the sponge to the flowers of the plant Celosia (Amaranthaceae). [details]
