Status Turbinaria Ehrenberg represents an objective junior synonym of Gemmipora Blainville, 1830. According to Scheer (1991, p. 407), the holotype of type species was found in the Esper collection. Type species well described by Veron and Pichon (1980). [details]

Diagnosis Extratentaular budding produces colonies of various shapes including vasiform, explanate, foliate, tabulate, encrusting, and hemispherical; corallites long, unifacially disposed; epitheca absent; septa arranged normally; columella well-developed, solid or spongy; zooxanthellate. [details]

Remark This genus and family were monographed by Cairns (2001), which included a phylogenetic analysis based on morphology. 14 species, 6 known from the fossil record. [details]
