Etymology Not stated. Assumed to be named after the nearby province of British Columbia, Canada, although the type locality in Puget Sound seems to be indicated in Johnson's text as Alki Point, Seattle in the USA. Ultimately, according to Wikipedia, the Columbia in the name British Columbia is derived from the European explorer Christopher Columbus via the name of the Columbia Rediviva, an American ship which lent its name to the Columbia River and later the wider region, with the Columbia in the name Columbia Rediviva from the name Columbia for the New World or parts thereof.
