Etymology The species epithet lancea is a Latin noun for lance or spear and treated as a noun in apposition. The name refers to the similarity of the red-over-white bands on the dorsal fin to the red-over-white spear banner carried by Lancer light-cavalry regiments in European (and Ottoman) armies over the centuries, and up to the present in the British and Indian Army. [details]
