Taxonomy Choristida Sollas (1885) (previously as Choristidae Sollas, 1880) was erected to encompass the orders Spirophorida and Astrophorida and an assemblage he called Microsclerophora which included unrelated Homosclerophorida and Thrombus. Later on, the latter were excluded from Choristida, but the name was maintained despite considerable erosion of the earlier content, until Lévi proposed to subdivide the group into separate orders Spirophorida and Astrophorida. The use of Choristida nevertheless persisted in the Anglosaxon literature until it was rejected in the Systema Porifera. The most recent recognition of the monophyly of the combined Astrophorina and Spirophorina and a large number of lithistid families prompted the resurrection of the previously used name Tetractinellida.
