Synonymy Synthesis of the comments of Willem Renema (pers. com., 2016) on the synonymy indicated by Fornasini (1908) between C. quoyi and C. hispida. The question of the synonymy between C. quoyi and C. hispida is part of an ongoing revision of the entire Calcarinidae. There is a lot of variability within the C. hispida group, see Renema (2008). C. quoyi status is questionable because d’Orbigny’s drawings are inconclusive and the type localities raised further problems. D’Orbigny (1826) gave three type localities for C. quoyi: Mariana Islands, Rauki Island North of Waigeo Island and Mauritius. Calcarina does not occur in most of the Indian Ocean, so it is very unlikely that it was collected at Mauritius. Also, the figured specimen can be from only one locality. In the Marianas that is probably C. hispida, but from Raja Ampat 2 or 3 species in the hispida group are known.
