William Carmichael M'Intosh was born at St. Andrews on 10th October 1838 and died there on 1st April 1931. He was educated at Madras College, St. Andrews and at the University of St. Andrews, afterwards at the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained the degree of M. D. at the age of 23. He was at once appointed as Assistant Physician to the Murray's Royal Asylum at Perth and three years later as Medical Superintendent to the Perth District Asylum, a position he held from 1863 to 1883.
