Was zunächst mein Interesse an den Ariciiden erregt hatte, waren erstens ihre einzig dastehenden, zahlreichen, metamer angeordneten Statocysten, und zweitens ihre von verschiedenen Forschern erwähnte Mittelstellung zwischen freilebenden und röhrenbewohnenden Polychäten. Das erstere Verhalten bildet ein anatomisch-morphologisches, das letztere ein systematisch-genealogisches Problem. Für die Lösung dieses zweiten Problems war es nun unumgänglich, zunächst die Systematik der Ariciiden selbst ins klare zu bringen und diese Aufgabe erlangte allmählich ein solches Übergewicht, daß die anatomische Durcharbeitung der Familie auf diejenigen Organsysteme beschränkt wurde, die für die Klassifikation hauptsächlich in Betracht kommen. Insbesondere blieben bei dieser Bearbeitung ausgeschlossen: das Nervensystem, das Gefäßsystem und der Mitteldarm, und aus diesem Grunde erhebt auch diese Schrift keinen Anspruch darauf, eine Monographie zu sein. Den trotz dieser Beschränkung allmählich stark angewachsenen Inhalt habe ich in drei Teile geteilt.
