Note  'Lithistida' are sponges sharing a skeleton built from desma spicules. The living representatives are but a small sample of a much larger fossil presence. The Recent lithistids are generally considered a polyphyletic assemblage, with various famlies and genera related to sponges lacking desmas based on shared microscleres. Examples are Scleritodermidae with sigmaspires identical to those in Spirophorida, and Corallistidae with amphiasters shared with Pachastrellidae. Unfortunately, most fossils and several Recent families do not demonstrate such clear characters shared with non-Lithistids, so their affinities remain obscure. For this reason, 'Lithistida' are here treated as an ordinal group of the Demospongiae.  [details]
