It is as yet unclear where the first use of Phloeodictyum was made. The Systema Porifera has no entry for this name in the index, but a mistaken use of the name Phloeodictyum appears at least in the legend to Fig. 1 of the chapter on Iotrochotidae (van Soest, 2002). Similarly, the name was used a few times in synonymy quotations in the ERMS report (Costello et al. 2001). For a time the Greek suffix '-on' was treated as a nomen corrigendum and changed to the Latin '-um'; however, this practice was declared unlawful and abandoned in the beginning of the 20th century.
