Nomenclature The name combination Dendoryx mollis Lindgren, 1898 was twice considered a junior secondary homonym of Myxilla mollis Ridley & Dendy, 1886. De Laubenfels (1936: 83) reassigned Lindgren's species to his genus Merriamium and without stating it apparently assumed that Dendoryx mollis would be a Myxilla (because Dendoryx Gray, 1867 was proposed a junior synonym of Myxilla Schmidt, 1862), which would then become a junior homonym of Ridley & Dendy's name. De Laubenfels subsequently proposed a new name for Lindgren's species, as Merriamium lindgreni. In a later review (De Laubenfels, 1939: 3), he confirmed this. The mistake De Laubenfels made (citing Ridley & Dendy's Myxilla mollis as if they used the combination Dendoryx mollis) is unfortunate because Lindgren's combination Dendoryx mollis is not a Myxilla as it is currently considered a Lissodendoryx, and had never been assigned to genus Myxilla before 1936. The same mistake was made by Hoshino (1981), who was apparently unaware of De Laubenfels' proposed replacement name, Merriamium lindgreni, and proposed his own replacement name Myxilla hiradoensis, under the same fallacious reasoning that Dendoryx mollis was a Myxilla and would be a junior homonym of Myxilla mollis Ridley & Dendy. For such cases of junior secondary homonyms considered no longer to belong to the same genus, ICZN Art. 59.4 stipulates that the junior name is to be reinstated, but unfortunately this only applies to replacement names proposed after 1960. Since De Laubenfels replaced the name Dendoryx mollis Lindgren, 1898 in 1936, his new name, currently Lissodendoryx (Ectyodoryx) lindgreni, is to be maintained, and Lindgren's name is rejected. [details]
