Taxonomic remark As pointed out by Bennema & van Moorsel (2011), while Lamarck only referred to Bruguière when naming this species, he inadvertently included two species in it: Beroe hexagonus Bruguière, 1789 (based on listing that name and its type locality near Madagascar), and Beroe beroe from Bruguière, 1791 based on pl. 90, fig. 5-6, which depicts Callianira hexagona Slabber, 1778 that was based on a decomposing European Pleurobrachia [details]
