Description Chiefly tropical and subtropical. Distribution: Atlantic coast of the United States to Stewart Island, New Zealand. Mouth never subterminal. Cycloid or ctenoid scales. Pelvic fins separate or fused to various extents. Sucking disc absent. With 2-8 flexible spines in spinous dorsal fin. Vertebrae 25-28. About 60 cm maximum length, reported for Dormitator maculatus.
