Type material A holotype for S. excisa was not designated but syntypes, four females (2 mature) and six males (4 mature), were collected by the Valdivia from the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Guinea, stn. 54 [01°51’N 00°31’E], 200–0 m, 11 September 1898 and Agulhas Bank, stn. 91 [33°23’S 16°19’E], 2000–0 m, 25 October 1898; also from the Indian Ocean, south of Ceylon, stn. 215 [07°01’N 85°56’E], 200–0 m, 11 February 1899; near the Seychelles, stn. 232 [03°26’S 58°34’E], 1500–0 m, 4 March 1899 and southern parts, stn. 173 [29°06’S 89°39’E], 2500–0 m, 10 January 1899 & stn. 174 [27°58’S 91°40’E], 2000–0 m, 11 January 1899. Most syntypes are in the MFN, Berlin (22346). Wagler (1926) did not indicate which specimen he illustrated. [details]
