The two toxic dinoflagellates, Alexandrium minutum and A. lusitanicum have been identified in waters of the Atlantic coast of the Iberian peninsula. A comparative study of seven different strains of this group has been conducted. The strains were isolated from the rias of Galicia, Portugal and Australia and in order to compare them, they were cultured under identical conditions during several transfers. Their morphology and toxin composition were studied over the whole growth cycle. Morphologically, both Spanish and Australian strains fit well with Balech's redescription of A. minutum. However the Portuguese strain, identified by Balech as A. lusitanicum shows some minor morphological differences from the other strains. All these strains have the same toxins, but the Portuguese one has more GTX2 and GTX3 than the others. Although it is possible to observe permanent differences between the strains, we propose A. lusitanicum as a sinonym of A. minutum.
