Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Grube (1859: 105): ''Corpus vermiforme, subquadrangulum. Lobus capitalis minus prominens, segmento buccali penitus impressus. Segmentum buccale et proxima 3 caruncula munita, cirri tentaculares nulli. Fasciculi setarum utrinque distichi: superiores cirro parvo muniti, inferiores cirro nullo, segmentorum anteriorum unum a ceteris differens, pectine setarum utrinque 1 armatum, cirro nullo: setae simplices, segmenti illius a ceteris diversae. Branchiae cirriformes, in segmentis anterioribus desideratae.'' [details]

Editor's comment The genus Porcia was erected by Grube (1859: 105) to include the new species Porcia maderensis Grube, 1859. Grube placed the new genus in the family Ariciaea (= Orbiniidae), but Eisig (1914: 266; not page '280', as cited in Hartman, 1957) stated later that it did not belong to this family (“Porcia nichts mit Ariciiden zu tun hat”). Based on this statement Hartman (1957: 214, 251; 1959: 368) considered Porcia maderensis to be indeterminable, both generically and specifically. Still, the description of the genus and species clearly shows that the taxa belong to the family Spionidae, with Porcia maderensis representing a blind polydorid with modified chaetae in chaetiger 5, and branchiae starting on segment 9. A more precise identification might be possible, but it is not intended here. [details]

Etymology Not stated, unknown. Porcia could be a reference to Porcia Catonis, wife of the Roman statesman Brutus and from whom William Shakespeare drew the character Portia of his play 'The Merchant of Venice'. [details]
