Remark The taxon reported by Thomas (1996) from Madang Lagoon in northern Papua New Guinea as M. commensalis, may be an un-named species. There are some morphological differences such as coxa 2 which is not as strongly produced anteroventrally, the propodus and carpus of gnathopods 1 and 2 which have slightly different proportions. Maxillipus commensalis lives on the gorgonian genus Melithaea in about 5 m depth. The Madang Lagoon taxon in depth of at least 25 m on Echinogrogia, Villogrogia and Verrucella. [details]
