Taxonomy This enigmatic animal has once been suggested as a degenerate protobranch bivalve mollusc by Israelsson (1999) but the current view is that this result was induced by contamination from a molluscan prey, and that Xenoturbella is related to the Deuterostome clade. It is proposed as a monotypic phylum Xenoturbellida by Bourlat et al. (2006).
Based on the pattern of Hox genes and on some published sequence data, Nielsen (2010) provided support for bringing together Acoela, Nemertodermatida and Xenoturbellida in a phylum Acoelomorpha. [details]
