Nomenclature The combination would be a junior primary homonym of Alcyonium gelatinosum Linnaeus, 1761 if Pallas' specimen was not conspecific with that of Linnaeus. Junior primary homonyms need to be renamed (ICZN 57.2). Pallas did not mention Linnaeus' 1761 description and cited quite a number of specimens of pre-Linnaean authors, some of which may be considered likely the same as Linnaeus' species. Despite the fact that Lütschwager (1914) and Hartmeyer (1916) suggested (without argument) that Pallas' A. gelatinosum could be an unnamed ascidian or a Botrylllus or a Diplosoma, it appears convenient to consider Pallas' name a junior synonym of Linnaeus' name.
