Taxonomy The Systema Porifera (Cook & Bergquist, 2002) attributed authorship of this subfamily to Bergquist, Sorokin & Karuso, 1999, but Prof. Jane Fromont discovered that Hyatt (1877) already erected a taxon of the family level (Phyllospongiadae) to accomodate Phyllospongia and related genera. Authorship is here assigned to Hyatt, 1877. If Phyllospongiinae remains assigned to the family Thorectidae, then this name is threatened by Phyllospongiidae Hyatt, 1877 as an older name. Thorectinae can then be maintained as a subfamilial name. [details]
