The new genus Vitissites n.g. including the type species V. comtei n.sp. is described from the Lower Devonian (presumably early Lower Emsian, lower La Vid Formation) of the Cantabrian Mountains (N. Spain). Although having a binodicopid aspect, V. comtei shows significant amphissitid features. Therefore it is tentatively put into the Amphissitidae Knight 1928 and consequently believed to belong to the root stock of this family. Nearly related to V. comtei seems to be the Middle Devonian species Kegelites polonicus Olempska 1979; both the taxa may form a (rather isolated) branch of the amphissitid family-tree, whose development (with maxima of divergence in Frasnian and Upper Mississippian times) is demonstrated
