Editor's comment Tokioka (Tokioka, T. 1953. Ascidians of Sagami Bay. Iwanami Shoten, Tokyo. 315 pp.) on page 213 lists Syndiazona grandis Oka, 1926. Then on p. 215 he lists "Aphanibranchion japonicum Oka, 1906" using quotation marks, and writes: "Aphanibranchion japonicum" is undoubtedly nothing but a colony of Syndiazona grandis in a renewal process as rightly printed out by Oka in his 1933 paper. Oka, A. 1933. Uber die periodische Erneuerung der Kopfe der Kolonie bei gewissen Synascidien. Proc. Imp. Acad. 9: 223-225.
(Tokioka was Nishikawa's major professor.) But curiously, Tokioka has this separate listing and also separate figures and does not explain why he did not just synonymize one species under the other. So he did not solve the problem for us! [details]
