A new marine rhynchodid ciliate Hypocomides weihaiensis n.sp.from the gills of a kind of marine mollusc Mytilus edulis off Weihai coast,Shandong province, was morphologically investigated based on living observations and protargol silver impregnation.Morphological comparison of the new ciliate with the known Hypocomides species was carried out and discussed.Hypocomides venusta(Kozlff,1946)n.comb,prior to Insignicoma venusta Kozloff,1946,was transferred to Hypocomides based on its infraciliature. The host-parasite relationship and pathogen were also discussed. Diagnosis:Large marine Hypocomides in vivo about(68~80)µm×(28~30)µm;an elongated macronucleus and a spherical micronucleus;thigmotactic ciliature of ventral side consisting of 2 complexes:the right complex composed of 18~20 kineties, the left complex constantly 18 kineties and curving onto the dorsal side;2 long kineties on the right side reaching backwards 3/4 of the body length;a long vestigial kinety situated posterior to the left complex. Host and Site: Gills of marine lamellibranch Mytilus edulis off the Weihai coast,Shandong province.Water temperature about 8.0?,salinity about 29.0. Remarks: The new species differs from the known forms in its much larger body size, more ventral kineties on both left and right complex, and a longer vestigial kinety located posterior to the left thigmotactic complex. Type specimens : A slide of holotype(WH-950428-01)and a slide of paratype(WH-950428-02)are deposited in the Laboratory of Protozoology,Ocean University of Qingdao,China.
