This paper is our 14th. contribution to the knowledge of the Hirudinea of Mexico. In the lake of Patzcuaro, Mich., only one species of leeches, Haementeria officinalis, had been cited so far. Besides this, we have found Glossiphonia stagnalis, Glossiphonia fusca. Herpobdella punctata and Illinobdella patzcuarensis, this one a new species in the genus Illinobdella recently created by Meyer. In the genus Illinobdella there are two groups of cells, one is periatrial and the other is peri-intestinal. None of these should be considered as salivary glands, as Meyer has thought, because a careful histological and physiological study shows that the secretion produced does not enter the proboscis nor the pharynx. The substances contained in !he cytoplasm of these cells are nourishing reserves used during the intense physiological activity which is characteristic of the reproductive period, and are consumed chiefly by the sex glands. At this time great vacuoles are formed. in the cells; the nucleus becomes excentric , enters in pignosis and is later destroyed, losing gradually, while these changes take place, its colouring appetites. Illinobdella patzcuarensis is very similar to Illinobdella alba Meyer in the shape and structure of the anterior and posterior suckers, in the eyes, intestinal enlargements between the five pairs of testicles, and in the situation of the dorsal intestinal caecum; but differs in that it has 14 pairs of nephridia, in the shape and structure of the atrium and in other minor anatomical details.
