Hydroides plateni, discovered at the mouth of Rio de la Plata by the Swedish « Eugenie » expedition in 1852, has been rediscovered for the first time by the French « Calypso » expedition in 1962 in several stations in coastal waters between the South of Brazil and Patagonia. The species may form agglomerations of tubes and densely incrust various substrata ; it also exists in water with lower salinity. H. plateni might thus be a species of harbour fauna on the coast of South America. H. plateni is distinguished by the uneven development of its verticil of opercular spines which may even be found on two opercular on the same specimen
