In this paper, we redescribe the species Haplosyllides floridana Augener, 1924 (Polychaeta: Syllidae: Syllinae), on the basis of a long series of specimens collected in a sample of the sponge Xetospongia muta, off Cuba. The conservation of the genus Haplosyllides Augener, 1924 is proposed, although several authors have considered this species as a genuine member of the genus Haplosyllis Langerhans, 1879; Haplosyllides has only one pair of prostomial eyes, the palps are fused to form a single piece, the antennae, dorsal and tentacular cirri are smooth, unarticled, and the pharyngeal tooth is only present on small specimens, lacking on large ones; also, the relative size of the proventriculus changes with the size of the specimen. The genus Haplosyllides was described on the basis of a solitary sexual stolen; since the stolons have different morphological features than non-reproductive (stock) specimens, the diagnosis of the genus was largely incomplete; we also provide a new diagnosis for the genus.
