Etymology authors: "The term “caiçara” (in Portuguese) derives from the Tupi kaaysá (an ancient indigenous language from South America), which means “a hedge made of dry branches of trees”. In the XVIII century, the term began to be used to designate the traditional inhabitants (of indigenous descent) of the coastal regions of southern and southeastern Brazil. The species is named according to this last meaning, since specimens were found in a region of the caiçara people." [details]
