Taxonomy Cacospongia exemplum and its four varieties were all described unrecognizably, but the nominal species and three of its varieties (prima, secunda and tertia) were later (1888, 1889) recognizably described. The variety terminus 'disappeared' or possibly was replaced by the var. marginalis in 1888 and 1889 (but this is speculation as Lendenfeld gave no explanation). [details]
