Type specimen ZMUC. The holotype contains spicules of Trachycladus stylifer and this was not recognized by Brøndsted. Subsequently, Bergquist (1968) assigned L.(B.) spinispraefera to the synonymy of L. (L.) brevis, but Samaai et al. 2006 reinstated it as a valid species. Specimen Bergquist's (1961) specimens that were assigned to L. spinispiraefera are not L. spinispiraefera. These specimens were synonymised with L. (L). brevis in Bergquist (1968), but they are no L. (L.) brevis either. Sim-Smith et al 2022 identified them as L. (L). triverticilliata [details]
