Taxonomy There is some confusion over the identity of Esper's specimen listed by him under this name. The text and the reference to plate X indicate it is the same species as Spongia dichotoma Linnaeus, 1767, but the name under the image of plate X is Spongia fruticosa. For that reason, we made a separate entry for Esper's record, but assume that it is not different from Linnaeus' species. [details]
