Editor's comment Blainville included these words when naming a species p.439 as "La N. éclatante; N. splendida, Nereis clava, Leach", but it is clear later that Nereis clava was intended as the species name. Subsequent workers were and are uncertain why he included 'N. splendida', but it is the Latin for the informal name 'éclatante'. Blainville also uses it for another species on p.443, N. splendida Savigny (a hesionid), thus creating a homonym pair in his own work if treated as the intended name rather than N. clava. Mostly the inclusion has been disregarded, and it does not appear to have been used as a valid name, rather than N. clava, in the following decades. Later authors including Johnston and Quatrefages thought Blainville's presentation was unsound. See also similar explantions under the entry for Nereis clava. Salazar-Vallejo et al (2021: 19), when discussing Blainville's usages of N splendida as a potential senior homonym to a Grube species, Nereis splendida, add further uncertainty by stating that "Nereis splendida de Blainville, 1825 [assumed to be the usage for N. clava but the page number is not given] refers to a nephtyid polychaete, which would be a junior synonym of Nephtys hombergi Savigny in Lamarck, 1818 according to Audouin & Milne-Edwards (1833: 257) and de Quatrefages (1866a: 434)." However, that is an incorrect interpretation of the facts, and Salazar-Vallejo et al (2021) appear to be unaware of the double use of 'N splendida' by Blainville, neither of which are valid names authored by him. Again see the extensive notes for Nereis clava Blainville. [details]
