Remark Comb. Nov.
In view of the existence of Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing (1846a: 6; basionym Micraloa
aeruginosa
Kützing, 1833a: 371, pl. VIII: fig. 23), it is not possible to transfer the oldest name for the
present species to Microcystis. Fortunately, there is an available nomenclatural synonym, Gloeocapsa
zanardinii
. When Hauck (1877) transferred the present species to Gloeocapsa, he was obligated to change the epithet because of the existence of G. aeruginosa Kützing (1843b: 174). [details]
