Taxonomy This name was originally introduced by Renier (1804, work rejected by ICZN Opinion 316) for a living species from the Adriatic Sea, and is available from Brocchi (1814) who himself doubted (see vol. 2, p. 652 [in translation "I therefore consider it [the fossil] to be a variety of the costulatum, but I will not argue with anyone who wants to consider it as a distinct species"). Usage of this specific name for the Recent species otherwise known as Nassarius cuvieriii or now Tritia cuvierii (Payraudeau, 1826) originated from Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus (1882) and has been followed by many Mediterranean authors.
However the identification of Brocchi's fossil specimen is uncertain. According to Cernohorsky (1975, based on an identification by Prof. W. Adam,in litt.) it is the same as Nassarius italicus (Mayer, 1876); according to Landau et al. (2009), the specimen figured by Brocchi is Nassarius striatulus (Eichwald, 1829). The name does not seem to have any usage other than that initiated by Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus (1882) for a Recent species. [details]
