Homonymy Incertae sedis. This is a senior primary synonym of Spongia muricata Pallas, 1766. In view of the vague original description of Linnaeus' original record of the name, and disparaging subsequent records in the 1767 and 1788 editions of the Systema Naturae (see Van Soest et al. 2012: 41-43) it is proposed here to consider Linnaeus' combination a nomen oblitum, and Pallas' combination as a nomen protectum.
